"Good Hotel, Excellent Location, But Noisy"

    Rate:  4 Stars

We stayed here during an eight-day vacation in Istanbul, and the hotel was a very good starting point for exploring the city. There are a few drawbacks, but on the other hand the price was favourable and the standard of the hotel on par with most mediterranean hotels of this kind.

Fairly recently renovated; room was clean and fresh, staff was friendly and helpful. Very pleasant breakfast restaurant on the top floor terrace with excellent view towards the sea. Good amenities with mini-bar, good quality shower, comfortable beds.

Reasonably close to public transport, the tram takes you to all major sights and is a 10-minute walk away up the hill. Short walk to the sea and to an area with plenty of nice fish restaurants.

The drawbacks: Extremely noisy. In the morning we could hear the sound of glasses being moved in the breakfast restaurant upstairs, noises from corridor, elevator and nearby rooms easily noticable. Street noises clearly audible at all times, although they were reasonable for a large city like Istanbul. Air conditioning unit in room kept the temperature cool and pleasant, but at the cost of constant noise. I don`t think this hotel was worse or better than any other in Istanbul, but the 4:30 am prayer calls were not very enjoyable... So even though I am usually fairly tolerant of noise, concerning noise this was the worst hotel I`ve been in so far. But earplugs helped.

The area the hotel was located in looked a bit run-down, but not more or less than the rest of the "old city". We had no problems walking to or from public transport in the evenings.

All in all, if you are noise sensitive this is not for you, but otherwise it`s a well kept hotel with friendly staff, good amenities in a very good location.

Room tip: Away from the street.

Like the other reviews I think this hotel is great for several reasons: it`s a 20 minute walk to blue mosque/ hagia sophia + 30 mins to topkapi palace (uphill though!) and 10 mins (again uphill) to grand bazaar etc. It`s located in the old part of the city and you get a real feel for being amongst locals and their day to day life. The staff are excellent - any problems were fixed immediately (like i punched the wrong numbers in the safe, went down to reception and by the time i was back to the room someone was there to fix it - that`s what i call service!!). We went to eat out each evening and for a couple of restaurants we needed to book and reception were happy to do this for us. The rooms are cleaned exceptionally well. No grumpy chamber maids or receptionists! Air con worked well - very important in summer months.
A couple of points to consider: the rooms are compact, some face the street and there`s lots of traffic in the afternoon and evening and some rooms on the third floor are directly under the terrace (which is used for breakfast) and the noise can be a bit irritating.
All in all, i would say it`s a great little hotel with super staff.

    "Top spot"

We arrived at the Best Western Amber at 8:00am, after a 10 hour bus ride from Bdrum in the south, fully expecting to be told to return at 2:00pm or, at bes,t to leave our bags and return latwr in the day.
Instead, we were checked in within minutes, sent upstairs for a complimentary breakfast and we were showered, fed and rrlaxing within an hour!!! Fantastic! The staff at reception were awesome, but everyone in the hotel treated us very well. It was one of the best of a series of excellent experiences in Turkey. The room wasn`t huge, but it was well-appointed, spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. We`d highly recommend the hotel.

Room tip: Rooms over the road can be noisy, but it adds to the ambience!

The Amber Hotel is an really nice restored ottoman mansion located in the east of the Sultanahmet area (10 minutes walking distance) and in the south of the baazar district (10 minutes walking distance too). It is a perfect spot for people who likes to discover one city by the most common way: walking.
English is spoken and if you have any trouble the reception reacts with dilligence.
The room was clean and spacious enough. It is rated three stars, but it is a real western standard three stars hotel.
On the drawbacks, the wifi connexion is pretty slow and the prices of the room displayed in the lobby don`t match the quality of this hotel (160€). I paid 50€ a night which is pretty fair for the quality.
I really enjoyed my staying there. The only bad surprise I had was a pretty expensive bill in the mini-bar. Be careful, even though the currency is not written on the menu, the prices are in euros, so that with three biers in the mini-bar and two on the inside terrasse I spent more than 30 euros, which is really expensive for the neighborhood. I will advice you to go in the pedestrian streets nearby which are not that touristic but still with a great Turkish atmosphere, especially the chicha bar crowded with local people playing badgammon.
