"Loved Bali and enjoyed our stay at the Elpis"Rate:  4 Stars
We spent a fortnight at Hotel Elpis in Bali. The rooms were basic but clean, each one has a veranda behind a sliding door. Rubbish was taken daily and the rooms were cleaned twice a week and the bedding/towels were changed then. We were in rooms about as close to the road as you could get and at night it was really really quiet, the only noise problem was from the cicada`s. The mornings were another matter, there is a German kids club at the neighbouring hotel and you get very loud renditions of kids songs in German from 10am-11am every other day. If you are up by then its not going to be a problem but personally when I wanted to lie in I didn`t think it was ideal.
The official photo`s make the pool look small if you ask me, its a good size and really deep. There are plenty of sun loungers and umbrella`s around the pool. There is a good pool bar with reasonably priced drinks and food. the whole outside area is really well kept.
If you are thinking about hiring a car you should do so there rather than beforehand. Elpis rents out cars at a very reasonable rate. We were there in high season and paid just over 200 euro for a weeks car hire in a C3. Not bad at all.
The niggly little things that we didn`t like were
1) our room didn`t have fly screen and for some reason mossies love me so I go bitten quite a bit. Our friends room did have a fly screen so I suppose its the luck of the draw
2) Its self catering but that consists of 2 hobs and a fridge, no toaster or kettle and the hobs take FOREVER to heat up. I suppose on the plus side eating out there is quite cheap...
3) Our room like many in Greece didn`t have a wall mounted shower, you had to hold it over your head, our friends one was on the wall, again I guess you take your chances.
The air conditioning was really expensive at 8 euro a night if you wanted it, we didn`t. If you wanted to keep your room on for the last day it was also really expensive, we went elsewhere but left our bags in reception because we had a 6am flight and I wanted some sleep!
The resort of Bali deserves a mention. Firstly I have to say Bali is a lovely little resort. Fab for anyone not wanting a `young and lively` resort. Bali consists of 4 small sheltered beaches, one is white sand and the others are kinda browny. The sea is calm most of the time and there are loads of small fish around if you want to snorkel. If you are going for a lively night-life Bali is not for you. If you are going to unwind or looking for a good base from which to drive to places then it is fantastic. There are loads of Greek tavernas along the beach`s, the closest of which is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. There are also some coctail bars and cofee places. Bali is a hilly little place but a family that was there at the same time as us had a child in a wheelchair and they said they hadn`t had any problems getting around. There is always the little train if you want to go to another beach and don`t feel like the 10-15 min walk, it costs 2 euro and the times are posted at every stop. We had a great time and would recommend the Bali and the Elpis to anyone looking for a nice relaxing holiday in the sun! The pics are of Bali and not the elpis.

We stayed at the Elpis for 1 week at the beginning of September. We were given a ground floor apartment which had its doorway on the corridor leading from the pool to the courtyard. The room was ok but we only had the towels (which had seen better days) and the bed linen changed once. I`m quite a fussy person when it comes to cleanliness and to be honest I`ve stayed at better.
The pool area was quite small with the usual suspects reserving the same sunbeds every day. The pool doesn`t have a shallow end, just deep and deeper! There is a tiny childrens area of the pool cordoned off for kids. We went to the beach most days.
The pool bar was ok at night for a few drinks before going for a meal and the two girls who worked there were very friendly. The problem was mainly the position of our room and the parents who let their kids run wild while they sat in the bar until closing time. The kids ran up and down the corridor outside our room which was like an echo chamber until after 1am most nights. So much for a relaxing holiday!
We hired a car from Elpis for two days, stopped at a garage 5 minutes after picking the car up to fill up... flat battery! We had to wait 20 minutes for someone to come and change the battery, we`re still waiting on an apology! The car itself was a nightmare, it wouldn`t go into gear which was quite dangerous especially on Greek roads!
Bali itself is quite spread out and very hilly but the beaches are nice. There isn`t many good restaurants, most are quite mediocre, all serving the same stuff.
Don`t think I`d rush back to Crete

we stayed here for 1 week , a late deal, and found friendly owners waiting for us to personally show us our room. nice and clean, pleasant pool area, with small bar selling delicious snacks. the barman, nikoss was very friendly and served ice cold beers! the only downside was the resident holidaysmakers used to `reserve` the sunbeds with little thought to other holiday makers who would like to use these during the day .with draping their towels/ belongings , over the beds, always the same people.and these were English! (other nationals were polite). one night we couldnt sleep as some young holidaymakers decided to use the pool from 10pm-4 am shouting/ and generally being very loud, having their own party. (beware make sure you get an apartment furthest away from the pool !).apart from this incident the hotel was generally good , and near the beach, bars ect, but very steep area so not good for walking difficulties.
Room tip: choose a room furthest from the pool ! (noise)

My husband and I stayed in the Elpis apartments when we were buying an apartment in Panormo which is 10 minutes from Bali. They are lovely clean apartments and the owners are the perfect Host and Hostess. Nothing is too much trouble for them. If you want a warm welcome go to the Elpis apartments. Demitris and Poppy are now good friends of ours and we see them every time we go to Crete.

"so dissapointing"Rate:  1 Stars
At first impressions were very good, the apartments were very new looking and quite modern. The beds were not at all comfortable. The aircon at 8 euros a night is a joke. The only time we need it is to cool room down before sleep, but of course you HAVE TO PAY FOR THE WHOLE DAY. Now for the real show of true colours,we were with excel airways and kosmar when it collapsed. The owner of the Elpis turned into a very nasty and greedy individual. Of course he did not care less about any of us and all he could think about once he learned he was insured was how soon he could get rid of us. The maid service slowly ground to a halt and our bed was changed once in 2 weeks, towels the same and it was only luck that the electicity broke down in our room, when we moved rooms we had a clean bed and towels. The carhire side of elpis was expensive and when the weather turned bad, again the greed showed itself and prices rose. The owner is a shrewd business man and dont let him fool you into thinking otherwise, money is the only thing the man cares about, I was expecting his eyes to have capital E`s in them by the end of our stay. . I would not recomend these apartments, without the airline collapse they are not comfortable, clean or have any particular attraction that would draw us back. I am led to believe that many people return again and again well they must be easy pleased. Some of the people we met had stayed at the Elpis before and were shocked at the treatment we received after the airline collapsed. To keep the room on for departure was a whopping 35 euros. As for Bali, the whole resort to me is full of greedy ill mannered people who only care about how much you will spend. The resort is pretty, most of the beaches dirty and last beach definately the best.

"Bali is Fantastic but the Elpis is VERY Average"Rate:  3 Stars
Well the most important thing about our holidays are the actual destination rather than the Hotel. The Elpis we found to be clean, tidy and well presented on 1st arrival, shortly after arriving to our room which was 45 mins from the Airport and a word from the rep on finding our room ( no staff working upon arrival!?) we found the key in the door and a note showing everyone our name.... we were later told to take our passport to reception and fill in the paperwork. we tried this but were told that we didnt need to by Demitri the owner. at this time we asked about the Safe (14 euro per week), the Tv (about the same as the safe) and the Air Conditioning which was absolutely rediculous at 8 euro per day! we paid for just the safe as that was the only really important part...... i lifted the front cover of the aircon unit and pressed a button which turned it on ;-)
as a married couple of 21 and 30 we found Bali to be a lovely place where you can find anything you like from fine food to lively bars and lovely beaches. The locals are generally great and are very welcoming... most unusually they dont, like some places, pester you for your business but let you make youre own mind up as you pass.
Car hire. Elpis..... I spoke to dimitris the 1st time about a car for a couple of days and was quoted good prices for the off peak season and i was going to book the day after as i was quite happy.... however, i returned to see his wife a day later who was insistant i paid full price for a larger car on peak rate prices as they didnt have anything small for hire, i would have taken it if she `offered us the same good deal` happy to pay a little extra for a slightly bigger car but she just didnt care, Full price and no deal on peak season rates..... No deal from me so left in search of something else locally. litterally 8 mins later i am parking back in the car park on the front of elpis with a new Hyundai which i saved 30 euro (off peak and a good deal) by going just around the corner and am faced with absolute ferocity by the woman from elpis..... ok, so i did park it in one of thier rental spaces but wanted to make a point!
Subject change: Pool was nice and clean, a little cold and quite deep so not good for poor swimmers! bar food was ok and drinks were expensive compared to local bars... best bet is to force a couple down at happy hour then go out. The girls who mann the bar tended to be a bit distracted by their mobile phones spending litterally hours on end chatting to there mates..... in fact they got to the point of holding 2 loose conversations with both an earpiece and customer talking at once...either that or they would be sunbathing.....irritating!
We love Crete, so far Bali is in our top 3 resorts but Elpis needed to `get real`. Staff and (female) owner needed a better attitude, Dimitris seemed mostly fine and often sent the shots of Raki about to us late drinkers as a freebie which was a nice touch.
Bali - Definitely
Elpis - Hmmmm, maybe
Elpis car rental - Defenitely not from her! Safe rental 30 paces away saved us 30 euro and cost us 65 euro for 2 days, elpis 95....

Stayed at Elpis apartments May/ June 2008. First impressions on arriving were of a clean ,tidy and well looked after property. Our apartment was spotless clean with furniture and fittings in good condition. Our apartment was cleaned 13 out of 14 days and our bed linen and towels changed every 3 days. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Dimitris the owner also has a car hire business and discounts to elpis guests. He will also help you plan your sight seeing with valuable info on places of interest not normally on the tourist trail. Bali itself is picturesque. It is built on 4 coves with safe bathing at each. The village itself is hilly and would present problems for persons with walking difficulties although their is a train that tours the village
Valentinos family Taverna at the harbour is highly recommended. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The staff are excellent and very friendly. The view of the harbour, sea and mountains is stunning as the sun goes down
Bali is peaceful, the Elpis is excellent and I would stay their again
